Bucky and Penny
Learn the Three S's!

Hey, boys and girls! It has been a while since I have told you a story. In case you’ve forgotten me, my name is Money and I am the father of Bucky and Penny and we live in the Beehive with their mother, Honey. This story is about Bucky and Penny and how they learned to save, share and spend their allowance.

It all started at the end of the summer when we were making final plans for vacation.

“Hey Penny, have you decided what you are going to take to Pollen Park?” Bucky was buzzing around the hallway and in his room getting ready for their vacation. Penny said, ‘Yes, I think so. I’m taking my pollen bucket and shovel, my bathing suit and play clothes. How about you?”

“Well, I am taking the same things and my honeysuckle pogo stick” buzzed Bucky.

“Oh what a great idea I think I’ll take my Daisy umbrella so I don’t have to sit in the sun all day” replied Penny.

“Beebees, do you have all of your things ready to pack? Your dad has gone up in the hive to get the leafcases” Honey said as she flew into their rooms. She checked everything they had laying on their beds. “It looks like you’ve done a really good job getting everything ready. Now don’t forget…your Dad’s birthday will be celebrated while we are on vacation. Have you bought his present yet?”

With a loud BUZZ both Penny and Bucky said “Oh no! We forgot Dad’s birthday. What are we going to do?” Honey buzzed, “Not to worry we can go the Bizzy Mall and pick up something. Get your money and we’ll leave now.”

Penny and Bucky looked at each other and they had a terrible feeling. They didn’t have any money. They turned to their Mom and said, “But Mom we don’t have any money we put it all in our savings account at the credit union.” Honey looked back at them and asked, “Do you have any money to spend when we get to Pollen Park?” Again Penny and Bucky looked at each other and slowly rubbing their wings turned to their Mom and said, “Oh no, we don’t have any money at all.”

“Did you put all of your money in the credit union ?” asked Honey. Hanging their heads Penny and Bucky shook their wings and said “No, not all. We forgot and spent all of the rest on toys and candy.”

Honey shook her antenna and said, “Okay, Beebees, we need to talk about your money. It is nice to save a lot of money and its fun to spend money, too. BUT you need to think about what you have to do and divide your allowance into different banks - one to spend, one to save and put in your credit union account and one to share. The share bank you can use to save money for gifts for other people or to share with someone who has less than you do. Now, how do you think we can fix this problem?”

Bucky and Penny looked at each other and with a loud sigh said, “I guess we’ll have to take some money out of our account at the credit union to buy Dad’s present and to have some money to spend.” Their mom said, “I’m sorry you have to do that but you need to think about how you are going to divide your money and not spend or save it all.”

Penny and Bucky nodded when their mom was talking and Bucky said “Wow, I didn’t
think about what we had to do with our allowance. I sure won’t do that again. I’m going to get 2 more banks to put money in. It’s a good thing we put some money in our share account or we wouldn’t have money to buy Dad a present or money to spend on vacation. Having money sure means you have to plan how you need to divide your money. Mom, do you think you and Dad can help us divide our money?”

“Of course we can! But right now let’s decide how much money you need to take out of your account at the credit union. We’ll go buy your Dad’s present and finish packing when we get back.” said Honey.

“Thankzzzzz Mom,” said Penny and Bucky.

They went on vacation and had a great time sliding down the bamboo poles, playing in the pollen and swimming in Dew Lake.

Bucky and Penny started saving their allowance in 3 bizzy banks when they returned from vacation. Their Mom and Dad helped them decide how to divide their money. So next year they’ll be ready for vacation and not have to take money out of their savings account.
