A cover letter is an excellent way to introduce yourself to potential employers. It gives you an opportunity to explain why you are contacting them and what your skills will add to their organization.
Like a resume, a good cover letter should be concise and kept to one page. Unlike a resume though, a cover letter gives you an opportunity to showcase your personality and your passion or desire for a particular job.
Here are the basics:
Header:
The letter should include the date, your contact person’s mailing address and a salutation or greeting.
Example
October 11, 2012
Mr. Brian Hedgepeth, CEO
Bronco Federal Credit Union
135 Stewart Drive
Franklin, VA 23851-2450
Dear Mr. Hedgepeth:
Body:
State your letter’s purpose in the first paragraph. Tell the recipient which position you are applying for (and the job number if one is listed), why you are interested in applying, and your qualifications. If you are responding to a job posting or ad, mention where you saw it.
In the second paragraph, summarize your credentials without recreating your resume. If you are responding to an ad, it should list the job requirements. Address them and how you specifically qualify.
In the third paragraph, thank the person for taking the time to read your letter and request an interview (and be sure to include your phone number on the cover letter).
End the letter with a simple closing of "Sincerely," and be sure to leave enough room for your signature before including your printed name.
Sincerely,
John E. Depp
